OpenAI, the Artificial Intelligence Research and Deployment Company, is reversing a reversed course in its work towards generating AI-developed text as opposed to human-developed text. The company has announced that it will no longer be pursuing its ChatGPT watermarking project after nearly a year’s development.

The move has been reported first by The Wall Street Journal and later confirmed by OpenAI in an update to a blog post. It comes against a backdrop of rising user concerns and technical challenges the company hadn’t foreseen.

A watermark that never was

This watermarking system of OpenAI subtly modifies the patterns in the words an AI predicts for a given text, rendering it effectively imperceptible to the naked human eye yet readily detectable by specific software. According to internal documents reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, the system is said to have as high an accuracy rate as 99.9% and can even withstand simple paraphrasing.

However, further scrutiny by OpenAI revealed that more advanced ways to manipulate text, particularly through other AI models rewriting content, succeeded in bypassing the watermark. It was the realization that highlighted the limits of the technology and opened up questions on the effectiveness in general.

More importantly, OpenAI received significant pushback from its user base. While an in-house survey indicated that there was a large global majority in favor of AI detection tools, close to 30% of ChatGPT users said they would be less likely to use the service if watermarking were implemented. This was a huge gamble for a company on an upswing with its user base and rolling out commercial products.

On the possible unintended consequence of watermarking, OpenAI was also concerned with the stigmatization of AI-generated content in general and, specifically, that of non-native English speakers.

The rapidly growing AI technologies call for the immediate development of strong mechanisms for gaining authenticity through the content. The Wider Implications of OpenAI’s Decision

This decision by OpenAI to rescind the watermarks in ChatGPT reflects deeper than internal tactics at OpenAI; in fact, it highlights a broader issue with the complicated dance involving technological progress, ethical considerations, and consequences for societies at large. Although implementation issues related to watermarking may have posed near-term challenges for the company, the more significant issue at stake is nonetheless the verification of AI-generated content.

Such a procedure applied to content verification would give a safe and reliable way of verifying content.

At the end of the day, however, the challenge with AI content will drive a multistakeholder solution. The answer will necessarily be a techno economic, ethical, and legal solution in order to create a viable ecosystem. Open collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders is necessary in the development of strategies that can be appropriate and effective.

This move by OpenAI to drop watermarking in ChatGPT brings to the fore the difficulty of policing AI technology. Of course, this decision might just solve some of the company’s immediate problems, but their repercussions will continue hitting AI and human society well into the future.
