Recently, YouTube announced a major update for its Shorts, further featuring an additional capability for creators to edit the thumbnails. With this new feature, users will be able to customize their Shorts so the content would look both beautiful and interesting.

To add any of those features to a Short, creators can tap the pencil icon in the top left corner of their video, select a preferred frame, and tap on the text, emoji, and filter icons to add one of each to the thumbnail. Tap the check mark in the top right corner to save.

While the personalized thumbnails won’t appear in the main Shorts feed, they’ll be very visible in a number of other important places: search results, hashtag pages, audio pivot pages, creator channels, home, and subscription feeds. This at least ensures that the customized thumbnails of creators have better visibility over a wider range.

Adding thumbnail editing features brings YouTube Shorts even closer to the likes of Instagram Reels, which also open ways for customization. YouTube does things a bit differently, though, and customized thumbnails are allowed to show only on certain parts of the site.
